Maine 2013: Day 12

Our last day of vacation included a walk around Castine, a hike in the woods, a boat ride, one last splash at the beach, and a lobster dinner. It was the perfect way to end our trip!

Gene took the boys down to the local bakehouse for second breakfast with Pop and his buddies.

And then they walked down to the water

and back through town. This is the Adam School, just two doors down from the house Nana and Pop rent.

And here's the house we stay in:

Next up was a hike through the Witherle Woods Preserve, which is right in Castine. This area actually saw military action during both the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

It was a beautiful day for a hike!

We found lots of wild raspberries along the way

and climbed to the top of a hill, where we had this amazing view of the water.

We got three of the cousins together on the bench

and used binoculars to check out the view.

After our hike, most of the crew went down to the Breeze for lunch.

And then it was time to suit up for our excursion on the whale boat!

The boys helped the Maine Maritime Academy instructor steer.

We scared a bunch of seals off their comfortable perch on the rocks.

What a perfect day to be out on the water! Thanks, Pop, for arranging it!

After an hour on the boat, we poked around town a bit and refueled with coffee (for Gene and me) and sweets (for the boys).

Then we headed down to Wadsworth Cove for one last afternoon at the beach, but it was really windy and very cold and we didn't last long at all.

Back at the house, we had a delicious lobster dinner outside. Two years ago, the boys were not fans of lobster but I'm happy to report that they devoured it on this trip!

With bellies full of lobster, the cousins ran around and found an apple tree to climb.

We truly had a wonderful vacation this year!
