The First Day of School: Second Grade and Kindergarten

Yesterday was the first day of school! My baby is all grown up and in Kindergarten and my firstborn is a second grader. Stop time, now!

I must have been feeling nervous about the first day and getting both boys to opposite ends of a very big school on my own (Gene was traveling), so I didn't sleep well. The good news is that my early wake-up meant I had plenty of time to make a special pancake breakfast for my boys and have it all ready when their alarms went off at 6:30. It's crazy that we're up and getting ready in the dark again.

The boys were so excited that the morning routine was extremely efficient yesterday and we were ready and out the door a good 10 minutes before we needed to leave. Fortunately, that gave us an opportunity to go over where to meet Will after school and of course we had plenty of time to take some photos of my big boys.

Will is all ready for second grade!

Henry is a kindergartner!

Both boys are so big that they gave me hugs and kisses and walked right into their classrooms. Henry wasn't the least bit sad, and of course, Will knows the drill.

We have two fabulous teachers this year. I have heard great things about Will's teacher, Ms. Marshall. She is supposedly very loving but also an excellent teacher -- what a perfect fit for Will! And Henry has Ms. Lox, who was named Outstanding Young Educator last year for ALL of HISD. We are thrilled with our teachers this year and know it's going to be a good one.

Now if only I could find a way to make time slow down a bit...

Summer Break: The Last Week

School starts tomorrow! I can hardly believe that summer is over. This was, I think, our most fun summer yet. I've talked with other moms and we all agree that the summers just get better as the kids get older.

I wanted to make the boys' last week of summer super fun and super special, so we did all of their favorite things. We were so busy having fun that I failed to snap pictures of some of the fun we had. Our week started on Monday with a playdate with Chloe and Bella at the indoor playground at First Baptist Church in Humble. It had been three years since our last visit there but Will remembered everything in detail and described it all to Henry, who didn't remember it all because he was only 2 the last time we went there. They had a blast running and jumping and zip-lining and sliding, but I have no pictures to prove it!

Tuesday was a museum day. The Health Museum had been doing special members-only events all summer long but we missed every single one until the very last one. One area of the main hall was roped off and set up with these massive foam building blocks from Imagination Playground. The kids could let their imaginations go wild and build away. As you can imagine, this was a huge hit with my little builders.

We checked out some of the other exhibits too and I discovered that my boys are very good at balancing on a wobbly platform. Henry held this position for over two minutes. I lasted all of 8 seconds when I tried it!

After a morning at the Health Museum, the boys were hungry so we went to the MFAH for lunch at Cafe Express. It is still one of Henry's favorite places to go! Tuesday was such a glorious day that we ate outside. I think the high was about 86 that day and it was just one of those rare days when you want to be outside in August, in Houston.

After lunch, the boys convinced me that we needed to visit the Children's Museum. That had not been part of my original plan since I hate to go there when it is crowded. It was very crowded but we explored for almost two hours. We had very few tears, no one got lost, and everyone was ready to leave when I said it was time to go. Success!

I took the boys to the zoo Wednesday morning, hoping for a repeat of the beautiful weather we had on Tuesday. It was definitely warmer but not unbearable. We had to visit the Legos animals again, and we always ride the carousel.

We came away with tons of questions about jellyfish, so when we were at the library yesterday, we made sure to find a jellyfish book. I'm sure Will will memorize the facts in no time!

Our special lunch on Wednesday was at Little Matt's. The boys had Icees, which I only let them get about twice a year. It was a special day!

We kept Thursday very low-key with just a run to Whole Foods in the morning because Henry had his meet-the-teacher at WUES in the afternoon! Henry is in the Vanguard program, just like Will, and we were thrilled to find out that he has an amazing teacher this year. We have so many friends in West U, from school, church, soccer, and just being in the neighborhood, so I was positive Henry would know someone in his class, but it turns out they are all new faces! Fortunately, Henry was completely fine for me to drop him off in his classroom while I went to a parent meeting in the cafeteria. I guess he really is ready to start kindergarten tomorrow after all!

We saved our favorite museum for Friday. We hadn't been to the science museum in awhile, so we definitely needed one more visit this summer. We got there just in time for their "Feeding Frenzy" at the Butterfly Center, but unfortunately, the snakes were not interested in eating, so there was no feeding and no frenzy. Still, it was interesting to talk to the entomologist about the museum's two pythons, Boo and Hiss. We learned that they only eat once a week, and that the mice they are fed are frozen and then warmed up. This snake, Boo, eventually took the mouse and tried to squeeze it to death by coiling up around it.

Our visit to the Butterfly Center wasn't a complete bust because we bought some more ant candy!

We visited the energy hall, Egypt hall, and dinosaur hall, where we got tons of information from a volunteer.

On our way out, we came across a sword fight! The demonstration was for one of the museum's summer camps, but we couldn't help but watch for a bit.

And then we met the museum's iguana and even got to touch her!

Our special lunch on Friday was at Phoenicia with Daddy. Henry had been asking to go back to Phoenicia for months so I knew we had to fit it in! It was delicious.

I have zero pictures from yesterday, but our Saturday was full too. Henry and I visited the farmers market in the morning, and then I took both boys to the library. After our explorations this week, we had lots of questions, so we were on a mission to find books about jellyfish, extinctions, the Arctic, and the elements. We came home with another huge stack of books, and then Gene took the boys to the pool for lunch and a swim. The afternoon ended with playdates at our park with new classmates and Gene surprised us with delicious calzones for dinner.

The week was not all fun and games.  We also practiced getting ready for school three times, from waking up with our alarm clocks to getting our backpacks on. I think we are ready for Monday morning!

Will also discovered that Daddy's big desk is the best place to write birthday thank you notes!

And Henry had his first homework assignment! He had to decorate the letter H with some of his favorite things. He painted it yellow, his favorite color, and we filled it with pictures of a violin, a bike, and Weezie, as well as a sticker from the science museum and a picture of Will and Henry at the arboretum and one of Henry in a wizard hat, and slapped some Mod Podge over the top.

I think this does a good job of showing who Henry is!

So now, after a wonderful summer spent exploring, reading, relaxing, playing and generally having a good time, we are heading back to school in just a short 24 hours. I *think* we're ready!

7

Will is SEVEN! In honor of his seventh birthday, I thought I'd write about seven things I love about my big boy.

1.  Will is intelligent.  This kid has the most amazing mind. He absorbs absolutely everything he reads and hears and loves to tell you about everything he's learned. He is crazy good at math (he multiplies numbers like 20 x 17 by breaking them apart and doing 20 x 10 plus 20 x 7. I am pretty sure he learned that from a book, because we didn't teach him that!).

2.  Will is inquisitive. He wants to know about everything! If he doesn't understand a word or concept, he'll ask. The other day we had a long, involved conversation about taxes because he wanted to know why he had to pay $1.08 for something that only cost $1. We spend a lot of time looking things up on the internet or checking books out of the library just so we can learn more!

3.  Will is a reader. Will is constantly reading (113 chapters books and counting this summer!). We usually have to visit the library multiple times a week to make sure he has enough books to keep him occupied. He loves to read everything from nonfiction and comic books (Calvin and Hobbes is his current fave) to novels and fictional series (Geronimo Stilton, Jack Stalwart and Zac Power were favorites this summer). When Will is reading, he literally tunes out the rest of the world and does not hear you talking to him. We usually have to take his books away when he is supposed to be doing something like brushing his teeth or eating breakfast so he will concentrate on the task at hand.

4.  Will is independent. I remember a little three-year-old Will who refused to go into the swimming pool for swim lessons by himself. Now at 7, he is completely fine to go into class or camp on his own. He has been telling me all summer that when he is in second grade, I cannot walk him to his classroom anymore and that we will have to say goodbye as soon as we enter the school. (Sad for Mommy, happy for big boy.)

5.  Will is an explorer. He loves to be outside, hiking, looking at plants and animals, and exploring his world. He is usually up for an adventure, whether it's a visit to a fort, a hike up a mountain, or a trip to the museum. Sometimes he adamantly does not want to go do something we have planned, but once there, he always enjoys himself.

6.  Will is musical. Will has loved music since he was an itty-bitty boy. I remember when a friend of mine, watching Will dance and groove to music at the ripe old age of about 7 months, said I should sign him up for a baby music class. A couple months later we we enrolled in Kindermusik and now he's taking piano and loving it! He's still dancing too. Will and Henry had a dance party just the other day, boogieing to their new Justin Roberts' CD. Will mostly likes kids' songs from artists like Recess Monkey or The OkeeDokee Brothers (which are fun enough for grown-ups too), but he also loves classical music and marches. Fortunately, we have not gone down the road to pop music, the lyrics of which are mostly not appropriate for little ears.

7.  Will is full of energy. Is it boys or the age? Will has so much energy. From dance parties and hikes up mountains to climbing at the children's museum and splashing in the water, Will is always busy!

Will is such a smart, energetic, amazing kid and I am so lucky to be his mom and be along to the adventure.   He has grown up so much and I can't wait to see all the places he'll go!

Will's 7th Birthday

Will turned SEVEN on Sunday. How is that even possible? Seven is so big!

The day started with a happy birthday phone call from Gramma and soft-boiled eggs, toast and fruit for breakfast.

After church, we headed over to Nana and Pop's for a hot dog lunch with the cousins. Nana baked brownies and the kids all cut out shapes out with cookie cutters.

Will sprinkled them with powdered sugar.

And then it was time to sing "Happy Birthday" to my big boy!

Presents!

After a few hours at Nana and Pop's house, we came home to relax for a bit before heading out for Will's birthday dinner.

Will chose to go back to Tokyohana (aka the Restaurant with Fire) this year. He is obsessed with Calvin and Hobbes after receiving a book for his birthday.

The boys still like lemons!

Trying for a shot of Will and Gene together.

And then I tried to get a nice picture of me with my boys and this is what I got. Gene said I couldn't delete the picture because it shows what life is really like around here lots of the time!

This is why we go to Tokyohana for birthday dinners! So fun.

We all had a wonderful day celebrating our big seven-year-old boy!

Will's Harry Potter Party

Will's 7th birthday was Sunday and we celebrated on Saturday with a magical Harry Potter party. My friend Ally designed the invitations as tickets on the Hogwarts Express. I just love how they turned out!

The party was a day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Will greeted his friends as they came to school

and then it was time to meet the teacher, Professor Friedrich von Fizzle, Adjunct Professor Emeritus of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and Director of Muggle Outreach.

The muggles were told they were at Hogwarts for the day to see if they have what it takes to become wizards.

Their first stop was Ollivanders Wand Shop, which of course is on Diagon Alley.

Fortunately, Professor von Fizzle was able to get a small collection of wands brought to Hogwarts for this special occasion.

Each wand was unique!

"The wand chooses the wizard, remember... I think we must expect great things from you, Mr. Potter."

Once all the boys had their wands, it was time to head to class. The first class was Divination, where the students attempted to look into their future.

Each student had a cup filled with ice (and a dollop of gel food coloring on the bottom).

They had to concentrate really hard to see what their future would bring, and once the bubbling liquid (seltzer water) was poured on top, the liquid would change color and their future would be revealed.

Will's liquid turned purple, which means he will be skilled at potions. Henry's turned blue, indicating that he will be a famous quidditch player!

Next up was Herbology, where the students planted the seeds of purple people eaters, which were specially harvested by Professor von Fizzle for our class! But first, the muggles had to decorate their pots with magical runes.

The kids showed great skill in Herbology and then moved on to Care of Magical Creatures. All the magical creatures had escaped and we had to follow the clues left by Hagrid to round them all up! The boys were very good at solving the riddles and rescuing everything from a unicorn to a spider.

Our next class was Potions.

The students first made the Wiggenwald Potion, which is known as slime in the human world.  (The flobberworm mucus was glue, honey water was plain tap water, salamander blood was green food coloring, and the liquid lionfish spines was a mixture of borax and water.)

The second potion was a bubbling truth serum. (The leech juice was a mixture of water, purple food coloring, and some dish soap. The crushed jabberknoll feathers was baking soda, and the horklump juice was vinegar.)

As you can tell from Will's expression, the bubbling truth serum was awesome!

After all their hard work, the boys deserved a little break. Will requested a cookie cake this year, so we happily got him one.

Seven!

After cake and a bunch of goofy jokes, it was time for our final class, Defense Against the Dark Arts. Professor von Fizzle had captured this dragon and we had to defeat him!

For the record, seven-year-old boys do not have any difficulty destroying a pinata! Will took off his head on his second go-round and has the trophy in his room to prove it.

After the harrowing encounter with the dragon, the boys were up for one last adventure, a field trip to Hogsmeade to visit Honeydukes, the candy shop.

These acid pops were just marshmallows coated in melted white chocolate and rolled in sugar sprinkles.

The sweet treats were the perfect end

to a very magical seventh birthday party.
