Maine 2013: Day 10

Deer Isle is not very far from Castine, so we decided to head down for a day trip on Saturday morning. There were some gray skies but we only got caught in a couple small rain showers.

Deer Isle is full of hiking trails managed by the Island Heritage Trust, and since our boys love to hike, we found the Pine Hill Trail right away. Signage in these parks is pretty minimal but we found our way to the rock outcropping and then to the top.

We did find a letterbox there and the boys signed their names.

We made our way to the top of the rock and had some beautiful views of Deer Isle and Eggemoggin Reach.

Our next stop was Nervous Nellie's Jams and Jellies. We had to get out our umbrellas!

My mom has been telling my about Nervous Nellie's for at least the past two years, so we knew we had to try to get there. They make really delicious jam, which we sampled and purchased, but Nervous Nellie's is also home to Peter Beerits Sculpture. The sculptures, made of native pine and metal artifacts that Beerits has collected, are spread throughout the woods and in a village-like setting. The boys were certainly intrigued.

We first came upon a man and a moose playing chess,

and then made our way up to the castle.

We found all kinds of places in the village, including Red's Lounge. It was a quirky place but definitely a fun stop!

Our next hike was at Shore Acres Preserve, but unfortunately, we had to turn back when we realized that most of the path was under water and it just wasn't safe to travel further.

We made it in to Stonington for lunch,

and along the way we found an old Mobil station and we had to take a picture, of course!

I had haddock chowder for lunch and Gene picked the steamed clams. He said they tasted just like his nana's!

Henry loved them too!

Our last hike of the day was at Scott's Landing, where we found this cool sculpture and where the sun finally came out!

Scott's Landing was once home to a dock (1807), Mr. Richardson's store, and the Scott family farm. We explored the beach, the woods, and the meadows and even found another letterbox and left our mark.

It was a beautiful day, and we are so glad to have finally visited Deer Isle!

After a quick stop in Blue Hill to visit some art galleries, we made it back to Castine in time to join the cousins for ice cream and some exploring at the beach.

It was another busy but very fun day!
