September 2019 Recap

September was another full month as we settled into our new school and work routines. Houston had some rocky weather (Tropical Storm Imelda came to town) and the boys had numerous short weeks.  Here's a peek at what our September looked like:

We celebrated the summer birthdays with dinner at Nana and Pop's.

Henry went to Camp Olympia for a four-day retreat with the 6th grade class at Kinkaid.

After returning home, he had an extra day off from school to rest and recuperate.  Gene took him to the zoo.

Will discovered author Brandon Sanderson, thanks to a recommendation from Aunt Jess.

We spent some time with Nana and Pop waiting out TS Imelda, on the day before it got really bad.

Then the storm came to town and flooded the streets.  Driving was a nightmare, and then school was canceled the next day.  This is what our extra day off from school looked like:

Henry continued with art

and created a grand bazaar in his room, full of treasures and trinkets from around the world.

Henry and Gene attended Middle School night at a Kinkaid football game.

On one of the boys' days off from school, Gene took everyone to the vet.

It was an exhausting experience.

My friend Leigh and her family were in town one weekend and we celebrated little Remy's third birthday.

She is so adorable!

We also had a couple of sick days.  Henry made it to school one day and promptly threw up on the grass. Poor boy.

Will was sick a different day.  Thank goodness Gene's schedule is flexible (when he's not traveling!).

We spent one evening with the Hickses and the boys got to try out their new VR.  They loved it!

Even though we're busy, we're still managing to cook a lot.

We're figuring out our new normal but it's been working so far!

August 2019 Recap

According to the calendar, it should be fall but since it is 90 degrees today and feels like the middle of summer, it's a great time to go back and recap August.

My birthday was at the tail end of July, and we celebrated by going to see Murder on the Orient Express at the Alley Theatre. It was such a great production of this play and just a perfect way to celebrate my birthday!

Birthday cupcakes from Crave

My first day of work as a school librarian was July 29!

The boys had a couple of weeks of camps and special time with Nana and Pop while Gene and I were both working but before Kinkaid started.  It worked out pretty well for all of us.

ID Tech Camp

Time with Nana and Pop -- including an epic Monopoly game

In other summer fun, the boys got out their water guns,

we played many rounds of UNO (Henry won this one in one turn),

we went out for ice cream just because,

and visited the farmers market.

Gene and Will were out one evening, so Henry and I made frozen hot chocolate.  So very yummy.

And Will has become quite the sous chef, helping to prep meals every weekend.

Henry continues to enjoy his weekly art class.

We celebrated Will's birthday on August 18.  We officially have a teenager in the house now!

Six Crave cupcakes because we couldn't settle on just two flavors.

Happy birthday, sweet boy!

Dinner at The Melting Pot -- more dessert!

The boys started school on August 21.

First day of 6th grade at Kinkaid

First day of 8th grade

One weekend, Henry and I went to visit the Holocaust Museum.  It was Henry's first visit and he has read so much World War II literature that it was time for a visit.  The museum has been recently renovated and is beautiful.

And finally, Gene surprised me with a visit to my school library at the end of August!  He came at a perfect time when I wasn't teaching a class, so he got the grand tour.

This fall has been a busy time for our family. Two working parents (one of whom travels a lot and the other of whom is still in grad school) + two busy kiddos = a very full schedule.  We are making it work and still finding time for fun, even though we're all a little more tired than normal!
