Lately: School

The school year keeps us on our toes! The kids have homework and projects and activities, Gene is busy with work and teaching a couple of nights a week, and I have found myself volunteering more than ever before. It gets a bit crazy and hectic at times, but we manage to get almost everything done.

Last week, the fourth and fifth graders were treated to an author visit by Geoff Rodkey, who was promoting his newest books in the Tapper Twins series. Rodkey was hilarious and we are so glad we purchased both books. Will read them in less than two days!

On Friday night, we visited the Houston Museum of Natural Science for another of their members' events. After making crafts, we toured the new Out of the Amazon: Life on the River exhibit.

Last weekend was jam-packed. The boys' school held its annual Boo Bash carnival on Saturday. With extremely heavy rain in the forecast, the PTO decided to move up the carnival to try to fit it in in the morning before the downpours hit. We didn't snap any pictures, but Gene and the boys explored the carnival for about an hour while Henry's teacher and I spun cotton candy all morning long!

On Sunday, we attended a baptism for a dear friend's baby, celebrated the October birthdays with Nana and Pop and visited with another good friend who was in town from Seattle. In between outings, the boys built a maze in the upstairs hallway.

The three amigos

The boys both had Hands On Art this week. I am lucky to volunteer again with the art program and help teach lessons to the kiddos. Henry's class learned all about Marc Chagall

and Will's class painted self portraits in the style of Roy Lichtenstein.

We are looking forward to Halloween festivities and some much-needed downtime this weekend!

Lately: The Astros, a Cub Scout Campout and Other Miscellany

Our weeks are busy and the weekends are even busier, but fall weather is starting to creep into Texas and we're enjoying every opportunity to get outside and play.

Our Houston Astros made it to the playoffs and we decked out in our Astros gear to cheer them on last week, but they lost their last game to the Royals and we've tucked away our jerseys til April.

Astros fans!

We love cooking at our house. Henry and I made applesauce on Friday with Paula Red apples that I picked up at Central Market. I left the peels on and they turned the applesauce a lovely pink.

Last week, Will had to write about a traditional food in his family and he chose Norwegian krumkake. Krumkake is like a waffle cone filled with whipped cream and we enjoy it every Christmas with my folks.

Last weekend was our first Cub Scout campout of the year. We camped at Stephen F. Austin State Park, which is one of my favorite state parks ever. The weather was perfect for October.

Cubmaster Gene officially kicked off the campout.

Will worked on whittling

and we played some tug-of-war.

We also visited San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site on International Archaeology Day, where we had a program about archaeology at the site.

We sorted artifacts in the teaching collection, watched a video, and toured the grounds.

Our pack

That night, Will and his den cooked us dinner as part of the Cast Iron Chef Adventure. They made pasta with meat sauce, green salad with chopped veggies, bread and apple cobbler. It was quite good and the boys worked really hard on the meal.

Henry's den went for a hike Sunday morning in the cool weather. We walked 1.7 miles and had so much fun exploring together. Scouts has been and continues to be a wonderful experience for our whole family. We've all made tremendous friends and the boys learn so many skills.

We are already looking forward to many more outdoor adventures this fall.

Lately: School Fun, Cooking and a Hawk

My calendar says it's October, but with temperatures hovering around 90 degrees for the last week, it still feels like summer here in Houston! Here's a quick peek at some of what we've been up to lately:

Henry's class held a funeral for the word "Said" last week. It was precious and the kids and teacher hammed it up with a eulogy, pretend tears and tissues galore. The kids all wore dark clothes as we said murmured goodbye to our dear overused friend, Said. It was a fun way to encourage the second graders to choose new words in their writing.

Also last week, our school held a Pete the Cat book talk. James and Kimberly Dean, the authors of the Pete the Cat series, came to visit our first graders and they were phenomenal! One perk of my new job as library volunteer coordinator is getting to meet all the authors. I even grabbed Henry from lunch to introduce him to James Dean! Pete the Cat was a favorite of Henry's in kindergarten and he loved meeting the authors.

Henry had a playdate with one of his best buddies after school on Friday, so Will and I grabbed some frozen yogurt at Menchie's and then came home to bake cranberry nut bread. We are bound and determined to celebrate fall even in the heat!

Our weekend was PACKED! Gene did some pro bono work on Saturday morning, so I took the boys to the farmers market and the library. The farmers market in October is amazing; watermelons are stacked next to pumpkins and butternut squash is piled next to zucchini and eggplant. We come home with bags and bags of fresh veggies, Gulf fish, eggs, and pasta for the week.

We bought carving pumpkins and sugar pumpkins and the boys got right to work scraping out the seeds.

Two pumpkins and one sweet potato, ready to roast!

Gene loves the pumpkin seeds, which I roast up with paprika, garlic salt, cayenne and pepper. They are addictive and Gene is already asking me to buy more pumpkins just for the seeds!

We turned our pumpkins and sweet potato into pumpkin pie. My dad always used a sweet potato in his pie, so I do the same. I reduced the sugar a bit, and Gene even ate a piece and asked for seconds! Gene is not a fan of sweets at all, but we've found a low-sugar dessert that he likes!

After a morning of cooking, we donned our Cub Scout uniforms and set out down the street to sell popcorn and raise money for our Cub Scout pack. We met some new neighbors and the boys had a successful outing.

On Sunday, I had my first real photo shoot with Katy and Jaime at the Houston Arboretum. I am by no means a professional, but we had fun and I think I captured some wonderful photographs of their little family. Check out the beautiful colors in the meadow.

And finally, we have a Cooper's hawk in the neighborhood again. We've seen him down the street a couple of times, and Henry was awakened Sunday morning by blue jays squawking. Henry peeked out his window to see the jays and the hawk in his holly tree. On Monday, as I was leaving for the grocery store, the hawk was standing in a puddle in front of my neighbor's house. I turned off the car, ran inside to get my camera, and spent about 15 minutes snapping photos. Isn't he beautiful?

I hope you're enjoying fall treats even if it's still hot where you are!

Lately:The Astros, a Birthday, and Fathers & Flashlights

Have you been watching baseball? After a dismal ten years for the Houston Astros, our baseball team is back in the playoffs this year! The boys had a rare Wednesday holiday a couple of weeks ago and the Astros were playing at 1:05 pm, so we picked up Gene from work and headed to Minute Maid Park for our first game this season! Go 'Stros!

Gene's birthday was last week. He was out of town on the actual day, so we celebrated a day late with dinner at Tiny's. Happy birthday, Geno!

We got him a "Tech Support" t-shirt because he is our tech guy at home! Unfortunately, tech support has not yet figured out why our TV is not working.

Last weekend was the annual Fathers and Flashlights campout on the school grounds. This event raises money for our city's parks and is always so much fun for the kids and dads (and the moms too, as we a night out with girlfriends!). The weather was perfect too with a low around 60 and a high around 80.

Breakfast

We found this crazy mustached spy in our house on Sunday afternoon.

And we also to set up some of our Halloween decor.

Henry found a blue jay feather outside.

Halloween is right around the corner!

October is one of our busiest months, but there is so much fun this time of year, from birthday celebrations and campouts to crisp mornings and Halloween costumes. I hope your October is off to a fantastic start!
