The Vermont Cousins Go to the Museums

It's no secret that my family loves museums.  We visit all the time and were so excited to share our favorite Houston museums with the Vermont cousins, who like museums as much as we do.

We weren't sure how bad the crowds would be during spring break, so our plan of attack was to arrive at the most popular spots before they opened. It worked! Our first stop was the zoo on Monday. It was a chilly morning but nothing we couldn't handle. Here are the three boys "swimming" with the piranhas.

Leo wanted to see vultures and Ella wanted to see the lions, tigers and bears. The grizzlies were actually eating breakfast when we arrived at their area.

After checking out the chimps, rhinos and giraffes in the African Forest, we rode the carousel.

We ate a picnic lunch at the zoo and then rode the train around Hermann Park. (Side note: My sunglasses fell off while we were riding the train and my sweet husband ran back to get them and then ran back to meet us at the train depot. He even beat the train by about five minutes!)

It was so pretty that we went for a little walk in Hermann Park and found this Pioneer memorial.

The zoo and train were it for Monday, but we were ambitious on Tuesday and hit up two museums. Our first stop was the science museum. The boys had to show their cousins the planets leading up to the museum entrance.

First stop was the Butterfly Center. Four cousins on the caterpillar!

I couldn't resist this picture of Henry by the knight. His knights and dragons party is just days away!

Ella and Amber checked out the iguana,

Gene made sure he could identify all the butterflies,

and then we spotted this atlas moth. It was bigger than my hand!

Can you guess what Henry wanted to buy?

Edible insects, of course! Larvets -- the original worm snax!

We played for awhile at the beehive.

And then it was snack time! We had regular snacks plus those larvets. Ella and my boys loved them!

We split up to explore the museum and by 11 it was time to head out.

We ate lunch at Little Matt's and played a couple of video games,

and then came back to our house. Ella napped, the boys played, and Amber and I went through Henry's clothes to pass down to Leo. We still had one more museum to visit! We headed to the art museum around 3 p.m. It was busy but not insanely crowded. We hit the highlights inside before heading out the sculpture garden, which is everyone's favorite!

Will and Henry were fascinated by Joseph Havel's Exhaling Pearls. Will wanted to know how the rope stayed up, so we investigated further and discovered it wasn't a real rope but bronze.

Henry shared his favorite sculpture with Will and Ella.

Two Ellas!

I tried to snap a photo of all four cousins but this was the best I got!

We are looking forward to even more adventures with the Vermont cousins.
