Neighborhood Birds

We are lucky to have so many birds in our neighborhood. Despite being in the heart of the city, we have more birds here than we did out in the suburbs! Our suburban neighborhood had been razed to raise up the land, so it makes sense to have more birds where there are more trees. It sure makes bird watching fun now!

These are all very common city birds, but it's fun for us to have so many in our small yard.

The robins like our worms!

Mockingbird eating a beetle.

House sparrow.

We see hawks overhead every single day.We hear them before we see them!

Noisy blue jays.

Cardinals, which always remind me of my grandparents.

We have more white-winged doves than we can count and nests galore. This is in our holly tree in the front yard.

This is a brand-new white winged dove with his mama. He hatched that day!

House finches. These little finches are always flitting around in pairs and the male has a beautiful red breast and a lovely voice.

Because we all seem to enjoy birds so much, Gene and I offered to lead an activity for one of Will's Cub Scout den meetings a couple of weeks ago. Our bird talk and activities helped the boys earn a belt loop, but the highest praise was from Will, who told me that I gave a great presentation and that he was even interested in birds now!

The Scouts met at the Bellaire Nature Discovery Center, learned all about birds, went on a noisy nature walk that scared away all the birds except for the ones in cages, and made pinecone bird feeders.

We hung our pinecone bird feeders in our holly tree.

Here's to more backyard bird-watching!
