A Weekend Adventure: East Texas (Day 3)

On our final day in East Texas, we had a full day planned. On our way to our first stop, we spotted the Texas Basket Company, and circled around to visit their factory store.

Then we were off to the Cherokee Trace Drive-Thru Safari, which ended up being so much fun! This wildlife park is home to over two dozen exotic species that roam in the most idyllic landscape. We enjoyed driving through the 300-acre preserve and feeding these wild creatures.

We saw so many animals, and I took so many photos!

As soon as the animals saw us coming, they rushed to the car.

Look at those horns

and that tongue!

If you go, beware of the camel!

As soon as he realized he couldn't get the food out of my cup, he leaned through Henry's window and grabbed his paper bag full of pellets! Quick-thinking Will grabbed the bag and salvaged some of the food, but the camel made off with a bunch of it (including the paper bag!).

A gaggle of geese

The safari park was so much fun and absolutely a highlight of our trip.

We had planned to visit New London, which is the site of an gas explosion that killed more than 300 teachers and students at the local school back in 1937. This tragedy led to the addition of odor to natural gas so leaks could be detected and future tragedies prevented. When we arrived, the museum was closed for the holiday week and we could only see the monument and historical marker.

With our plans slightly derailed, we decided to call it a day and head back to Houston (a day early). As always, we had so much fun exploring and discovering new places to visit!
