A Saturday Adventure: Birding at High Island and a Quick Visit to Galveston

Last Saturday was gorgeous, and there's nothing we enjoy more than spending a pretty day with Mother Nature. As soon as Henry and I returned from the farmers market, we loaded up the car and headed east to High Island for our second annual birding adventure. This year, Gramma and Grampa decided to join us!

Our first stop was Boy Scout Woods to pay our fees and grab wristbands and maps. And then we were off through the woods!

We didn't spot any birds, but we found thistles,

blackberries,

and wisteria!

Our next stop was the Methodist Church for barbecue lunch, which was phenomenal! They only have lunches on Saturdays in April, but we highly recommend it if you're there!

The after-lunch highlight was the goats next door!

And then we were off to the Rookery, which is always the best part of visiting High Island. Thousands of egrets, cormorants and spoonbills nest here and it's the most incredible sight.

And alligators, of course!

Butterflies and flowers everywhere

Best of all, was having Gramma and Grampa along!

After High Island, Gramma and Grampa headed back to Houston, but we decided to take the Bolivar Ferry over to Galveston. Unlike last year, we had no wait for the ferry and drove right on! It's a fun trip.

In Galveston, we visited the Lone Star Flight Museum

and popped into Galveston Island Brewing Co. for snacks and a couple of beers.

Our High Island-Galveston adventure was so much fun! If you like birds and haven't been to High Island yet, it's well worth the visit.
