Vermont 2016: Days 1 and 2

The boys and I just returned from a five-day getaway in Vermont. We felt lucky to be able to go and spend time with family and escape the heat of Houston.

We flew to Vermont last Wednesday, on my birthday. Birthday beer to celebrate!

Thursday was our first full day in Vermont, and we went berry picking at Adam's Berry Farm in Charlotte. Amber and Ella were with us but Ella didn't want to be in any of the photos.

Raspberries

Ella showed us a robin's nest they had found just the day before!

Happy chickens

It was a beautiful day to be outside!

We also picked some blueberries.

After picking berries, we headed to Shelburne Farms.

We watched the cheese making,

milked a cow,

and jumped from log to log.

We ended our afternoon with some splash time in the hotel pool.

On Friday morning, we were up early so we could hike Mount Philo.

At 968 feet tall, Mount Philo is not technically a mountain, but it sure is fun to climb.

We saw a red eft, which is a juvenile eastern newt,

and lots of these North American millipedes.

Lots of rocks and boulders to climb.

And then we got to the top and this is all we saw. Cloudy day = cool hiking weather but not much of a view! The sun came out by the time we hiked back down to the bottom, though.

After hiking, we freshened up back at our hotel and then went to Shelburne Museum to meet Gramma, Grampa, Amber and Ella for lunch.

This summer, the grounds are full of these amazing kinetic sculptures by artist George Sherwood.

We visited the jail, the Dutton House, the toy shop, the incredible Grandma Moses exhibit and Once Upon a Quilt, an exhibit of three-dimensional quilts.

We always enjoy our visit to Shelburne Museum and there is still more for us to explore and see!

We all enjoyed dinner and cake at my sister's house that night. Amber makes the most incredible chocolate cake and it's such a treat to celebrate the summer birthdays together as a family!

And finally, a photo of the four goofy cousins!

More Vermont adventures coming up.
