Sailing

Gene used to sail a lot as a teenager, and in the past year, he's had a couple of opportunities to join my friend Leigh's dad, John, out on the water to race. Gene loves it and was more than happy to spend most of Saturday sailing.

John's boat: the other woman!

The races were delayed a bit due to storms.

Check out that storm cloud.

They did pretty well. In two races against three other Ensigns (the kind of boat they were sailing) they came in second and third. You can just see some of the competition trailing behind them in the shot below. Best of all, Gene only forgot to duck once and so has only a minor bruise on his left ear.

Sailing is a long-standing family tradition, but things have changed a lot since Gene's grandfather went to sea. For comparison, here's a shot of him at the wheel of a Gloucester schooner!

Sailing -- it's in his blood for sure!
