Portugal 2014: Day 8

We spent Sunday morning touring Ilhavo with Pop. We saw where Pop's mom grew up,

where an aunt lived,

and where his dad's home, down a beco, or alleyway.

We wandered through the Ilhavo cemetery.

This tombstone is not from a family member, but it certainly showcases the influence of the sea on Ilhavo's citizens.

We finally ended up at the Catholic church, where Pop's parents were baptized and married. We attended Mass, and the boys did great, considering it was all in Portuguese!

In the afternoon, the four of us headed north to visit the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira. This castle's walls date from the 11th century but the majority of the castle is 15th-century.

We climbed a narrow, winding stone staircase to the very top and were rewarded with beautiful views of the valley below.

This was our last castle of the trip but it was impressive and a good one with which to end.
