Spring Break 2014: Part 1

We have been looking forward to spring break for weeks! The boys had early release on Friday, so we took them to lunch at Skeeter's and then went and traded in Henry's old 16" bike for a new 20" bike as an early birthday present. We took it for a spin all around the neighborhood and ended up at the school playground for awhile.

On Saturday morning, Henry and I made it to the farmers market just before the rains came. Henry made friends with a baby goat.

We had big plans for the weekend that involved a Houston Dynamos game and a camping trip, but unfortunately it rained all day Saturday and Sunday and it got cold (for March in Houston) so we nixed those plans and instead stayed home and worked on projects for school, church class and Cub Scouts.

For Cub Scouts, Will had to build "something useful" so we bought a birdhouse kit and the boys put it together on Saturday morning. Thank goodness for a covered driveway!

Just waiting for Will to get his shoes on.

Henry has binoculars -- all set for his birthday party this weekend!

The first step involved glue.

There was lots of hammering too.

All done!

Proud boy.

That evening, we belatedly celebrated Gramma's birthday with dinner and cupcakes from Crave.

Instead of sitting in the rain to watch a soccer match, Gene and I headed to Mongoose vs. Cobra after dinner, where we enjoyed some local craft beers. I had the 8th Wonder Rocket Fuel, which was based on Vietnamese coffee and is very delicious!

Sunday was another stormy day, so we took advantage of the bad weather and cheap matinee seats to finally see The Lego Movie, which was great. We all enjoyed it much more than Frozen. That evening, the boys headed out to grill hot dogs for dinner. Since we were supposed to be camping Sunday night, we decided the least we could do was cook a camp dinner! These three love to grill and like to say that grilling is relaxing.

Monday morning was cold and cloudy, so we all did work around the house. But right around noon, the sun came out and we headed down to Brazos Bend State Park for an afternoon of hiking. We chose to hike around Hale Lake, which was almost 3 miles in a part of the park we hadn't visited before. It was beautiful and very quiet, with only only the sounds of our feeding crunching on the gravel and the many, many birds.

It was about 60 degrees and sunny, so just the perfect day to get out and hike.

We saw cardinals, ibises, lots of vultures, ducks and this guy who was loudly calling from a stump.

As you can tell, spring break is off to a great start!
