Gene had to go back to work on Tuesday, but the boys and I have continued enjoying our spring break week. We have filled our time with some of our favorite activities and it's reminding us all that the long, relaxed days of summer are just around the corner. We can't wait!
This is a random picture but I like it because it combines past and present. The egg cup belonged to my dad's dad and is over 100 years old. The boys love soft-boiled eggs so it gets used frequently. I just love the juxtaposition of it next to Will's very modern Rainbow Loom.
On Tuesday morning, we had to go to the library to get more books! Henry picked out a couple of Star Wars stories while Will is reading up on secret codes.
After the library, we headed to the MFAH for lunch and some spring break activities. In the Open Studio, Henry created two paintings using acrylics while Will kept on reading. After making some art, we visited the Impressionism exhibit and then went to see a collection of animated and live-action shorts compiled by the New York International Children's Film Festival. There were 12 short kids' films in all and they were different, creative, and so much fun!
We strolled through the sculpture garden
and stopped by Gramma and Grampa's new place to say hi and check out the views of downtown from their rooftop deck. This isn't a great picture but their views are fantastic!
On Wednesday, we were up in the Heights to pick up Henry's birthday pinata, so we stopped at Berryhill for lunch with Gene and then went to see A Year with Frog and Toad at Main Street Theater.
Thursday was a fairly laid-back day but the weather was phenomenal, so the boys played outside with Play-Doh, bubbles and a new croquet set.
We had Gramma and Grampa over for dinner and an early birthday celebration for Henry. It was such a lovely evening that Henry suggested we eat outside, so that's exactly what we did and then continued with some present opening at the picnic table.
Henry was so happy to be able to open some presents on the day before his birthday!
He couldn't figure out what these were, so he asked Gramma.
She said she didn't know and Henry leaned over and said, "But they're from you!" I just love the expression on his face.
He finally figured out that they're his very own binoculars!
Henry's next gift was a box full of pencils. When my mom asked him a month ago what he wanted for his birthday, he said pencils!
This kid was honestly so excited to get pencils because he loves to draw!
My dad also tucked in a pin that says "Libraries are something else."
And Henry's last gift was a book that was my dad's when he was little. It's a cookbook called Susie's New Stove which I remember reading when I was little. It's a great gift for a boy who loves to cook!
I'm not sure what this picture is about but am guessing Henry was bummed that the presents were all opened. It didn't last long, though, because he quickly ran upstairs and started drawing and writing with his new pencils and dropping notes down from the upstairs balcony!
And finally, it wouldn't be spring without a mass of pink azaleas in the backyard.
They are late this year but they finally bloomed and are putting on quite a show just in time for Henry's big day!
