I Live in a Zoo

But you knew that already, right?

Today, I really lived in a zoo.

Henry put his zookeeper costume on right after breakfast, and within minutes, I heard the dreaded whine, "I don't know what to do, Mommy." Hmmm. Maybe you should take a cue from the costume and play zookeeper?

The boys don't always like my suggestions, but today, they hopped right on it. First, they had to write the signs for all the animals' enclosures. Will took his job very seriously, and made sure he spelled everything correctly. You wouldn't want to mistake a "snake" for a "snack," after all.Henry wrote some signs too, all by himself. Obviously, I didn't help him write "bear" here, as it is written backwards and his B is really just two circles. But, still, I'd say it's not a bad effort for a 3-year-old. We had four animals in our zoo. A blue horse, of course. A purple snake. A brown bear. You probably can't see it in the photo, but Will chose to use his sign, and not Henry's "rAE8." Go figure. And a curious monkey. It was feeding time, so Will gave his monkey a pear. The snake got two "live" mice. Will wanted to cook them first (he is so civilized), but I told him it was unnecessary. Blue Horse was feeling, well, a bit blue, so Zookeeper Will brought out the medicine. All you have to do is match the picture on the medicine bottle to the animal's facial expression. So clever. The zookeepers even cleaned up the animals' messy cages. And Zookeeper Henry kept an eye on the whole thing (or at least on me) with his handy-dandy binoculars.
See? It really is a zoo around here.

Smoothie Face

Smoothies are a favorite afternoon snack at our house and we drink them almost every day in the summer (you know, when we're not gobbling up drippy, ice-cold watermelon).

Chocolate-peanut butter smoothies are the boys' current favorite. And I don't feel the least bit guilty for indulging them because they are actually very healthy! We blend together a couple handfuls of ice, a cup or so of milk, a generous tablespoon of peanut butter, one very ripe banana and a couple of teaspoons of cocoa powder for the three of us. They are sweet (but with zero added sugar!) and icy and just the perfect treat on a hot summer day.

But maybe even better than the yummy smoothies are these precious faces. Will lost his shirt during the battle of the smoothie dribbles.
And can you see the cup marks on the boys' faces from tipping the cup practically upside down?
Smoothies... they're good to the last drop!

A New Camera and Some Backyard Fun

We got a new camera! Okay, it's actually not that exciting because it's just a little point-and-shoot to replace our seven-year-old one that puts lovely colored lines through the middle of all our photos. I still have my nice big Rebel, but sometimes a girl needs a pocket-sized camera that takes better photos than a smartphone!

So, a tiny little Canon Elph (in red!) arrived on our doorstep this week, and once we got a new memory card for it, I had to try it out.

Fortunately, the boys were running around with water guns yesterday, so I had an opportunity to take plenty of photos. The very first photo on the my new camera! Henry is very serious about his water guns. I sent Gene out to water my herbs. Then the boys chased him. Gene ran with that silly watering can for quite awhile before he realized he could put it down! Happy boy!Cornered!Henry ran right at me, at full speed.Posing for Mommy. Henry had trouble pointing his water gun the right way.A little better...

Finally got it right! Yep, I've got two cool, water-gun-yielding boys and a super cool tiny new camera! Whee!!!

Watermelon

We got an 11.4 pound watermelon in our CSA box last week.

I know how much it weighed because the boys and I weighed it. On the human scale. The little kitchen scaled freaked out when it saw me coming with the infant-sized melon and flashed "ERROR!" repeatedly. Apparently, kitchen scales are only for lightweight kitchen items and not big ole watermelons.

I carried that watermelon upstairs and back down. In hindsight, since I don't like heights and my hands were very full of watermelon, it might have been a smarter idea to bring the scale downstairs, rather than the watermelon up. Fortunately we all survived the journey intact. Can you imagine what an 11.4 pound watermelon would look like if it fell? I can.

Once sliced, the boys dug into that watermelon like it was Halloween candy. Seriously yummy. The circle of watermelon.
Is anyone ready for a snack? I've got about nine more pounds of watermelon in the fridge!

Love Letters

I knew Will would progress quickly from writing words to writing full sentences. Yesterday, he was just bursting with sentences!

He wrote:
We hav a bisee day.
and
Go too werk. (This was aimed at Gene, who was heading out the door!)

But this was my favorite:
I like how he substituted the heart for the word love. So much easier! Aw...sweet boys! We love Henry too. And we love our big, love-letter-and-sentence-writing-almost-Kindergartner!

The Huntress

Weezie loves our new house. She spends most of the day outside, chilling in the tall grass, waiting for a lizard or a bird or a possum to cross her path. Yes, you read that right. Weezie has caught lizards and garden snakes for years and years but she caught her first possum and bird last week. The bird was one of the many many mourning doves we have and it sadly did not survive. The baby possum that Weezie caught and proudly deposited at the back door did survive. It "played possum" and Weezie didn't care for it once she thought it was dead. As for me, I was very happy to watch the little guy get up and wobble off, leaving me only the bird's corpse to deal with. A couple of days after Weezie caught the possum, Gene found this little guy out by the garage on his way to his early-morning workout. The baby possum ran into the garage and hid in a corner and hissed at me when I tried to nudge it out with the broom. Good thing Weezie was safely inside that morning!Who knew there was so much wildlife in the heart of the city??

Happy Birthday, Jaime!

Birthdays, birthdays everywhere! The boys got to celebrate their friends' birthdays yesterday morning and last night, Gene and I got to leave the little people at home with Nana and Pop and go out for dinner with our good friends to celebrate Jaime's birthday! Woohoo! The birthday boy picked a Cuban restaurant nearby that we'd never been to before. We indulged in yummy sangria, ate loads of delicious food, including Katy's famous chocolate sheet cake, and laughed a lot.
The waitress brought Katy a huge butcher's knife with which to cut the cake! Delicious dessert!Super friends + good food = one fantastic birthday dinner. Here's wishing Jaime a very happy 39th year!

Chloe and Bella's Birthday Bash

We celebrated Chloe and Bella's birthdays yesterday with a morning full of outdoor water play, an indoor craft project, pizza, fruit and cupcakes, and, of course, presents! Belinda threw her girls a joint girls-only princess party back in May, so we conspired to get together this summer to let my boys celebrate with their best two buddies! Belinda put so much effort into this second party just for my guys but it was so much fun! All of the kiddos loved the water slide best! Baby Nicholas even got to try it out! These are my best group shots! Will was trying to eat everyone with his toy shark.Happy, wet boys! After feasting on pizza, loads of fruit and a yummy snack mix, it was cupcake time!Happy 5th birthday, Chloe!
And happy 4th birthday, Bella!Magic candles! The girls blew them out again and again! Then we made a super cute craft -- painting stencils on backpacks! I didn't get a pic because I was helping the boys, but it was fun! Next up were presents. I am not in-the-know when it comes to girls' gifts so I kept it simple with a board game that we own and love (eeBoo's Fairytale Spinner Game is awesome if you don' t have it!) and two not-your-typical-prince-saves-the-princess princess books (The Frog Prince, Continued by Jon Scieszka and The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch). Happy birthday, Chloe and Bella! Thanks so much for inviting us over and letting us celebrate your special days with you. We had a blast!
