and past a thatched roof cottage.
The Viking Ship Museum is home to five actual Viking ships. In the late 11th century, these ships were deliberately sunk in the Roskilde Fjord in order to prevent attacks to the town. They were excavated in 1962 and they are just amazing!

Across from the museum is ship building yard, where replicas are built and sailed.
We watched a group of visitors sail off in this Viking vessel
and then climbed aboard one ourselves for a few minutes.
We found a spring on our walk back to the town center, and then ate lunch in a lovely restaurant across from Roskilde Cathedral.
Roskilde Cathedral, constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries, is a gorgeous Gothic cathedral that has been the resting place of Danish monarchs since the 15th century. We had less than 10 minutes to visit as it was closing for a funeral, but we are so glad we had a quick opportunity to peek inside.
And with that, our time in Roskilde and Denmark came to an end. We rode the train back to Copenhagen, where we ate dinner at our flat before packing up everything and getting ready for our early-morning flight to Stockholm.
We all truly enjoyed our time in Denmark. The weather was lovely and cool and mostly sunny, the people were friendly and helpful everywhere we went, and the food was delicious! The boys learned about their Danish heritage and we all agreed that Copenhagen is a city that we would happily visit again.
