Denmark 2016: Day 3

On our third day in Copenhagen, we woke up to gray skies and lots of rain. We opted to walk to Christiansborg Slot, a royal palace and home to the Danish government. The current palace is the last in a series of five castles built on the site, the earliest of which was built in 1167.

We toured the extensive ruins under the palace as well. The ruins are from Absalon's Castle (1167) and Copenhagen Castle (late 14th century).

We ended our tour of Christianbsorg with a visit to the kitchens.

We found a turtle shell, and of course had to take a picture.

For lunch, we decided to try traditional Danish smorgasbord, and our airbnb host told us exactly where to find the best in Copenhagen. We headed to Canal Kafeen and tried pickled herring along with other traditional dishes.

After lunch, we walked around the corner to the National Museum of Denmark to explore their exhibits.

We saw some Viking ships and the boys dressed up as Vikings!

After some downtime back at our flat, we took the metro to Carlsberg Brewery. The rain had mostly stopped and the sun was out.

We toured the old brewhouse and enjoyed Carlsberg beers and dinner on the patio.

Copenhagen's famous little mermaid sculpture was commissioned by Carl Jacobsen of Carlsberg Brewery as a gift to the city, and there is a small replica on display in the brewery gardens.

We also enjoyed visiting the brewery horses, which today are used as ambassadors for the brewery.

What a fantastic end to our day!
