A Saturday Adventure: San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge

Saturday was an absolutely gorgeous fall day, so we decided to head out on another weekend adventure. After nixing the idea of a new state park due to a 2-hour drive, we found San Bernard National Wildlife Refuge, which is just over an hour south of Houston.

We started on the Bobcat Woods Trail,

which was part boardwalk, part trail.

The trail was really hard to see once we got off the boardwalk, even with our map, and the mosquitoes were thick in the forest, so we ended up circling back to the Wolfweed Wetlands.

We found an observation platform and saw so many birds! We were the only people there, and it was just beautiful and quiet (save for the buzzing of the mosquitoes!).

This refuge is a bird-lovers paradise. We saw ibises, hawks, spoonbills, blue herons and more.

We kept a close eye on the four alligators we saw, but they did not seem interested in us.

Will spotted this H in the sky, so I snapped a picture for Henry.

The San Bernard Refuge is a beautiful spot and we have only seen a tiny part of it. We will be back, with lots of bug spray on hand!

After hiking and bird-watching, we trekked back to the car and turned our picnic lunch into a car lunch (the mosquitoes were really bad!) and followed the auto tour through the rest of the refuge.

And since we were only ten minutes away from Lake Jackson, we decided to head over to Sea Center Texas, which is a small aquarium that we visited last November. The boys love the touch tank.

And I love their wetlands walkway.

We saw turtles, ibises and an egret.

Gene even grabbed my camera and took a few shots.

Check out Will's expression in this picture. He was done with the birds and being outside and just wanted to go home and read a book!

Despite the crazy mosquitoes, Saturday was a gorgeous day to be outside, and we all had a fabulous time exploring a new part of southeast Texas!
