June 2020

June means summer break! This year was so different -- no vacation, no in-person summer camps, no regular outings or weekday adventures. We tried to make the best of our unusual summer and, while it wasn't what we had planned, it wasn't bad.

Here's a peek at our June (pics in chronological order):

This kitten made everyone smile!

The boys did have summer camp at ID Tech, but it was virtual. Will made a Pong-type game and Snickers chased the ball around the computer screen.

Back to the arboretum.

We did take go on a morning adventure to see some outdoor art.

Statesmanship Park statues

And the murals in Art Alley at Sawyer Yards

Gene and Henry played a ton of Minecraft and created this amazing virtual library just for me. It might be the coolest thing ever!

Frozen hot chocolate is a favorite summer treat.

We must have had a June cool front because there is no other reason I'd be wearing pants at the arboretum in June.

Henry and I went berry picking at Wood Duck Farm.

Blackberries AND blueberries!

Watching the meadow change at the arboretum

More kitten antics -- Snickerdoodle discovered his shadow.

Henry and I saw lots of juvenile yellow-crowned night herons at Hermann Park.

The Japanese Gardens are specatalar.

Back at the arboretum!

One of the best things about June was that we adopted a SECOND kitten. Snickers is adorable but he pounced on everyone, including poor Freyja, and started nibbling at us. We did a ton of research and it turns out the solution is to get another kitten.

This is Oreo and she is 6 days older than Snickerdoodle but a whole lot smaller.

This sums up the first week of their relationship -- Snickers was curious and ready to play, and Orie was terrified.

Snickers loves to sleep upside down on our pillows.

And you know what they say about curious kitties.

Zipper spider at the aboretum

Visit to the MFAH

"Radical: Italian Design 1965-1985" -- it was a pretty fun exhibit!

Father's Day was pulled pork!  Yum!

And plum kuchen for dessert.

And more arboretum pics. By visiting multiple times a week, we saw so many more plants and wild animals than ever before.

New painted parking meters at the arboretum

We even (finally) saw the alligator that has resided in the meadow lake since Hurricane Harvey.  We had been looking for him for months and then we saw him two days in a row.

An armadillo.  We actually saw a lot of armadillos this summer!

Snake

Summer fun -- lots of Uno with Henry

It took a week, but these two are fast friends. Snickerdoodle is huge compared to Oreo!

Our one and only day trip of the entire summer was an outing to Aggieland Safari Park outside of College Station.  The boys love safari parks and it's something we felt we could do safely while social distancing.  And it was fun!

There's a small zoo and a drive-through safari park. We were there early and it wasn't crowded and it was surprising pleasant for late June.

Ice cream for the drive back to Houston

And that's a wrap for June during a pandemic.
