May is always one of the busiest months in our household. From library inventory and 5th grade graduation to finishing up the Scouting year and end-of-the-year celebrations, there is so much going on in May!
Here's a peek at just a few of the things that have been keeping us busy lately.
Not pictured but worth mentioning -- Gene and I went to see Alton Brown, live at Jones Hall, at the end of April. If you're an Alton Brown fan, I highly recommend his live show. He kept us entertained and laughing for three solid hours!
Henry and I spent a morning at the zoo while Gene and Will completed an orienteering course in Hermann Park for a Boy Scout requirement. It was a pretty warm day but the cloud cover kept the temps in check and we had so much fun. Will likes the zoo, but he doesn't love it the way Henry does!
Zoo selfie right before we met up with Gene and Will to eat at the Pinewood Cafe in Hermann Park.
We have had some beautiful early May days, so we've been enjoying our backyard as much as possible. My parents came for dinner one night before heading off to Maine, and the boys have been running and chasing Ruby. Being chased is one of Ruby's favorite things in life.
Last Friday, I hosted a library volunteer appreciation brunch and going away party for our school librarian, whom we are going to miss so much! I coordinate the schedules for our 50 volunteers, and every year, I host a brunch to let them know how much we appreciate them! With a school as big as ours, the library wouldn't run without help. This year, about 35 volunteers were able to join us for the brunch. Gene, who is the hugest help with events, was out of town, but three of my friends helped make food and were here for set up and clean up. I was so appreciative of all their help!
Check out this cake that my friend Gwendolyn made for our librarian! Gwendolyn iss a former pastry chef and this cake tasted as good as it looked!
The brunch was so much fun, but it was exhausting too! Fortunately, we had plenty of leftovers so the boys and I ate brunch for dinner that night. Will especially liked the "kid mimosa," which was orange juice and lime La Croix.
Gene arrived back in town on Saturday morning, just in time for our niece's first communion. It was a crazy day, with a welcome breakfast for Will and me at Kinkaid, so Henry hung out with Nana and Pop while Gene went straight to Mike and Jess's house from the airport. I don't have any photos of the first communion, but it was a lovely Mass!
Gene brought back gifts from his travels to Singapore. He found this candy sushi in the Tokyo airport and couldn't resist buying the boys each one.
By Saturday evening, Gene was exhausted and the fridge was pretty bare, so went out to dinner (after I dragged Gene to two polling locations to vote for our mayor and city council and also on HISD's prop 1 -- why we had to go to two different locations on the same day is beyond me, but voting is important, even if you're jet-lagged!). Local Foods = one of our most favorite restaurants ever.
Can you tell how much these boys miss their dad when he's traveling??
