Lately: Putt Putt, the Zoo and Projects Galore

January has been a busy month for us. We're back at school and in our routines, but that means our evenings and weekends are full of school projects, Cub Scout events and squeezing in time outside when the weather is nice. Here's a peek into some of what we've been up to lately:

Will had the great idea to play miniature golf a couple weekends ago, so we found a place just south of us and spent an hour playing together.

After putt putt, we treated ourselves to Mongolian Hot Pot (our first time!) for lunch. It was delicious and we all enjoyed the simmering soups on a chilly day. A bonus was that the restaurant was just a block away from the Fish Gallery, where we headed next to pick up our eleven new fish!

Will loves to make origami projects. This is his fall harvest scene. If you look closely, you can see grapes, acorns, morning glories, and a fox.

He also likes to make hats for Freyja, who is less than impressed.

Projects, projects, projects! Henry has been working hard on his Caldecott project for school (note Freyja sitting right on the book!), all three boys made cars for the Pinewood Derby, and Will has been reading for Name That Book and working on an expository project for his homeroom teacher.

Henry built this tower out of Lincoln logs while visiting Gramma and Grampa on over the weekend.

The boys had an early release day last Friday, so we visited the zoo's new "Washed Ashore" exhibit. The art works in the exhibit are made from trashed items that washed ashore on Galveston beaches. So much trash!

The exhibit is amazingly beautiful but also incredibly sad at the same time. Sea creatures eat so much plastic because we humans don't properly dispose of or recycle our trash.

We're trying to do our part at home by reducing, reusing and recycling, but the boys have really taken to picking up litter on the streets and disposing of it. Every little bit helps!

Mercer Arboretum and the Zoo

Winter break this year was a mix of very warm, humid days and cold rainy ones. The skies finally cleared out and the very last two days of our break were perfect -- clear and cool. We took the opportunity to get out and explore a bit. We visited Mercer Arboretum on the last Sunday of break and it was beautiful!

The boys also had Monday off, so we visited the science museum and then Gene met us for lunch at the zoo.

Getting out and about was the perfect way to end our winter break!

Winter Break

The kids are back at school and we are back to our regular rhythms and routines, but oh, winter break was a blast! It's my favorite break each year because Gene works very little, so our days are full of family fun.

Here's a peek at some of what kept us busy this year:

We played lots and lots of games. Clue is a new favorite!

Gene made aebleskivers, fried pancake balls, one morning.

The boys loved building a stick shelter at Nana's house.

We spent some time exploring the McGovern Centennial Gardens with Gramma on a beautiful day.

We didn't get to ride the Polar Express this year (severe weather prevented us from leaving Houston) but we kind of made up for it by visiting the Christmas Village at Bayou Bend.

Henry had a quick chat with Santa, after Christmas!

We rode a tiny train.

The holographic images on the side of the house told a story of the mischievous spirit of the house who tried to steal Santa's bag. It was hilarious and Will asked to watch it repeatedly!

Santa's reindeer were scattered throughout the grounds, but we found them all. The Christmas Village was a lot of fun and may be a new holiday tradition!

We also went to see the Christmas trains at Second Baptist Church. What fun!

And our big exciting news is that we have a new kitty! We adopted Freyja, a torbie (tortoiseshell coloring with tabby markings) from the SPCA. She is 3 years old, declawed, and is the sweetest, friendliest cat! She loves to sit on your chest and cuddle up. Freyja and Weezie haven't quite made friends yet, but the rest of us adore her.

Freyja loves to hide. Two of her favorite spots are the bag of bags in the pantry

and Will's backpack.

Needless to say, our winter break was quite exciting!

Christmas with Nana and Pop

After a quiet morning of unwrapping gifts and playing with new toys at home, we loaded up the car and headed to Nana and Pop's house, just in time for lunch and more Christmas presents. You can tell from the picture below that the cousins were so excited to see the piles of gifts under the tree!

Everyone got lots of goodies!

After presents, Gene took the boys outside to practice casting with their new fishing poles.

And the cousins had a blast playing together.

We ended the evening with a delicious standing rib roast dinner, complete with scalloped oysters, garlic mashed potatoes, kale salad, roasted carrots, and rolls.

I hope your Christmas was full of family and fun!
