California 2015: Day 5

Thursday dawned gray and chilly, so we grabbed our sweatshirts before heading to the Embarcadero to explore San Diego's maritime history. Our first stop was the Maritime Museum of San Diego.

We climbed down into the USS Dolphin, the deepest-diving US submarine,

and checked out the 1914 Pilot boat that belonged to Gene's uncle Ed. Gene's uncle was the pilot for the San Diego Harbor for many years and this is the boat he used to guide commercial vessels in to and out of the harbor.

We also visited the USS Midway, a massive air craft carrier.

Inside, we talked to veterans who had served on the Midway and other ships during World War II, Vietnam and Operation Desert Storm. The boys enjoyed sitting in the cockpits.

It is indeed a floating city!

We learned so much from veterans. What a unique experience! They had so many fascinating stories to tell.  The boys especially enjoyed exploring the radio room.

The Midway was massive and we didn't quite have enough time to see everything because we had to grab lunch before heading back to the Maritime Museum to take a harbor tour on the Pilot boat!

We learned all about San Diego's history on the tour and we all enjoyed being out on Uncle Ed's boat.

Our afternoon ended back at the beach on Coronado Island. Even though it was cloudy, the boys couldn't wait to run into the ocean.

Brrr! It was so chilly!!

After warming the boys up with a hot bath back at the hotel, we walked a few blocks away for dinner and craft beer at Coronado Brewing Company.

A flight for Gene and a half pint of their Orange Avenue Wit for me -- my favorite of the trip!

Craft beer and pub food? The perfect way to warm up after a chilly day by the sea!
