Here's a look into what we've been up to lately:
Reading, reading, reading! The boys were rewarded last week with a special lunch with the librarian for completing their summer reading logs. They both read 50 books and were the #2 readers in their grades!
The kids gathered in the multipurpose room to eat with the librarian and other friends who participated in the school's summer reading program, and it's a always a really special time for them. I was lucky to attend this year because I am a library volunteer and our wonderful librarian needed some help passing out bookmarks and other goodies to the little readers!
Speaking of reading, Will has joined the Name That Book Club at school and is loving it! The club wasn't even on our radar until we talked with the school librarian at Open House. She looked at Will and said, "Will, you're in 3rd grade now. Why aren't you in my Name That Book Club?" And with that, he was in! The club, for 3rd through 5th graders, reads all 20 Bluebonnet books plus 10 more and discusses them as a book club weekly. It's a great club for Will because he loves to read and talk about books!
And now that the boys both read independently, our bedtime reading ritual looks a little like this:
We all (including Weezie) pile into our bed and read together. Sometimes we still read out loud to the boys, but more often than not, all four of us grab our books and read away. It's a lovely way to end the day.
Now for the reptile: We were heading out one afternoon and this little lizard was heading in! I saw a quick movement near the door and knew immediately we had a lizard loose in the house. Rather than let Weezie stalk the poor little guy, Henry and I stealthily caught him and set him free.
Henry wanted to keep him in his terrarium but we decided the great outdoors would be a better home.
Bye-bye, lizard friend!
Finally, we celebrated Gene's birthday yesterday! The four of us went to dinner at The Black Lab.
It was the perfect place because we could enjoy some beer and good food in a grown-up yet kid-friendly enviornment. I love that our boys don't even look for a kids' menu; they just eat regular food! We started with potato skins because the boys were starving and then split two "Tour of England" plates, which had shepherd's pie, fried fish, baked beans, bangors, and veggies. Perfect for our party of four!
Besides the food, which the boys loved, the big hit of the pub was the giant chess set outside.
When we got there, two kids were playing chess. The boy recognized my boys from a summer art class at the Glassell, so Will joined in and gave the other boy some pointers. Once their game was over, Will played a quick game with Gene!
The game ended in a draw. We can't wait to go back to the Black Lab for more fun!
Back at home, Will had a surprise for Gene. He learned to play "Happy Birthday" on the piano!
Happy birthday to the best husband and dad!
