Just in case our weekend wasn't busy enough with two soccer games, we decided to add in a camping trip too! The weather was just too beautiful not to be outside, and we had promised the boys a camping trip before it gets too hot.
After Henry's soccer game, we came home, packed up, ate lunch and headed up north to Huntsville. We hadn't been to Huntsville State Park before so we were excited to explore a new park! I'm so glad we did because we had a blast.
As soon as we got to our site, Henry and Gene got to work setting up the tent
while Will had a snack. Priorities!
Our campsite was just across the street from Raven Lake.
It was beautiful!
Henry didn't want to go hiking at first. The boys were under the impression that hiking and camping were two separate things that didn't mix. I blame Fathers and Flashlights for that. Their only other camping experience involved bounce houses!
Once we got going, though, they loved it, of course. We chose the Dogwood Trail because it was about a mile and a half long, which is a good distance for us.
Henry is obsessed with holly berries.
He found this branch and waved it all around saying, "The sign of Christmas." Remember his "spirit of Christmas" pine branch from Mission Tejas State Park?
My boys.
We found this satellite TV dish on the trail. Apparently not everyone can leave the comforts of home behind when camping!
The sun was starting to set as we headed back.
Back at the campsite, Gene made a fire
and got dinner going. We enjoyed hot dogs, chili, chips, and lots of chopped veggies.
Yum!
I snapped a couple of pictures of my cuties.
Henry's eyes looked so green in the fading light.
After dinner, we walked down to to the lake.
The boys were so excited to make s'mores.
Our campsite had a shelter which we used as a staging ground for the food and supplies. So handy!
Happy boys!
Sunset over the trees
We slept fairly well, considering it got down to 38 degrees Sunday morning! Henry woke up at 1 a.m. and snuggled in with Gene and I gave Will the extra sleeping bag. Everyone woke up at 6:30 with the sun, ready for coffee and breakfast. Camp percolator in the fire!
The coffee was actually pretty good and just what we needed on a very chilly morning.
Breakfast was scrambled eggs, peanut butter toast, and apples plus coffee and milk. Gene is quite the camp chef. Everything was delicious!
Misty morning view of the lake.
After packing up, we were ready for one last hike. We stopped at the nature center and planned to do a short .2 mile loop but we missed it and instead went on another 1.5 mile hike. It was fun though!
Henry found another pine branch!
We had an amazing time camping and are hoping to squeeze in another trip next month.
